2/4/10 Update:
As of March of 2009, the CADE required all students in dietetics education programs to obtain cultural competency skills.  Many employers of RDs and DTRs also require that their employees receive training in cultural diversity.

ADA has a wide range of resources available to assist you with the education and awareness of cultural diversity.  I have included the link to the ADA diversity resource page.  For an in-depth discussion of the topic, you can also check out the article entitled Cultural Complexities in Dietary Assessment and Treatment in the October 2009 JADA.

I hope you will find these resources useful.

ADA’s Research & Strategic Business Development Team is pleased to announce the publication of the Celiac Disease (CD) Evidence-Based Nutrition Practice Guideline, which is FREE to all ADA members on the Evidence Analysis Library! Within this guideline, you will find nutrition recommendations related to celiac disease on the following topics:
   Medical Nutrition Therapy
   Bone Density Screening
   Gastrointestinal Symptoms
   Gluten-Free Dietary Pattern
Consumption of Whole/Enriched Gluten-Free Grains and Products
Addition of Multivitamin and Mineral Supplement
Calcium/Vitamin D for Reduced Bone Density
Monitoring and Evaluation of Dietary Compliance

This guideline contains systematically developed recommendations, based on scientific evidence, and is designed to assist practitioners on the appropriate nutrition care for patients with celiac disease. ADA members, including an expert workgroup and trained analysts, extensively examined the research to develop a series of recommendations and treatment algorithms which accurately summarize this body of evidence. The intent of ADA’s guidelines is to support the integration of evidence-based dietetics practice and improve the quality of care.

This guideline is one of eleven published guidelines on the library; other guidelines include Adult Weight Management, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Critical Illness, Diabetes Type 1 and 2, Disorders of Lipid Metabolism, Gestational Diabetes Mellitus, Hear Failure, Hypertension, Oncology and Pediatric Weight Management. To visit the guidelines, go first to
www.eatright.org, sign-in as an ADA member and then select the Evidence Analysis Library link in the left menu bar of the Home Page.  Once you are signed-in to the ADA Evidence Analysis Library®, select the “Guidelines” tab or find the “Celiac Disease” link in the A-Z index.

Nutrition and You: Trends 2008:  ADA’s Consumer Opinion Survey
Where does the American public get its information on food and nutrition?
Are the most popular sources also the most credible?
Are consumers doing all they can to eat well and exercise? If not, why not?
Have people increased or decreased their consumption of fruits, vegetables and other foods in the past several years?
What do people think about organically grown products, low-fat foods, allergen-free foods, probiotics and other foods and nutrients?

Nutrition and You: Trends 2008
presents a vivid picture of American consumers’ current attitudes and offers an opportunity to trace the evolution of people’s knowledge and beliefs about food and nutrition over nearly two decades.

For your benefit, a PDF of a Power Point slide presentation is available on the website to help you follow consumer opinions and to use on the job.  Click here to access.

Enjoy this great benefit.
